Global Perspectives in Life Sciences

Description:

This course is designed to introduce life sciences to students who are considering it for university study. You will be equipped with problem-solving skills to explore the role of life sciences in daily life, such as diseases, through real-life research, science investigations, and discussions with scientists. You will develop a deeper understanding of the knowledge and theory as well as engaging in interdisciplinary research. The course also includes visits to other science organizations and offers opportunities for you to meet and speak with scientists studying or working at the university. Embark on your journey towards becoming a professional scientist!

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how life sciences contribute to solving real-world global problems.

  • Gain knowledge of the interdisciplinary nature of science.

  • Critically analyze and draw conclusions from scientific data.

  • Design and plan a well-structured scientific investigation in groups and under the supervision of the course teacher.

  • Summarize and communicate results in a scientific investigation.

  • Target Audience: Academically high achieving Year 12 and 13 high school students (Secondary 5 – 6) between the ages of 16 – 17

  • Tuition Fees: HKD 62,000* (HKD 55,800* - 10% discount available for HKU Academy for the Talented members)

    • Comprising lectures, social activities, as well as accommodation with breakfast and dinner (additional charges may apply).

  • Recommended Airfare Schedule:

    • Departing from Hong Kong to Edinburgh: June 28, 2024 (Arriving at Edinburgh Airport on June 29, 2024) (Time: To be confirmed)

    • Departing from Edinburgh to Hong Kong: July 13, 2024 (Arriving at Hong Kong International Airport on July 14, 2024) (Time: To be confirmed)

  • Accommodation:

    • Included at Edinburgh's Hall of Residence with breakfast & dinner.

* The programme fee includes tuition, accommodation with breakfast and dinner in Edinburgh, course materials, a welcome kit, and transportation from the airport to accommodation in Edinburgh for those who choose the recommended flights.

* Please note that the programme fee does not include flights and accommodation in Hong Kong. Applicants are responsible for arranging their own travel to and from their home country, as well as transportation between London and Hong Kong. Our HKU programme coordinator will contact the admitted students by the end of February 2024 to provide more specific information regarding further arrangements.
